In the second week of November 2020, Adventure Hokkaido guided a small group of local visitors to Mt Arashiyama and Kawamura Kaneto Ainu Museum in Asahikawa. Overnight it snowed down to sea level, Mt Arashiyama trail was completely covered by fresh snow in the morning! Mt Arashiyama is a sacred place to Ainu known as "Cinomisir", in the Ainu language which means "the mountain where we pray". We walked about an hour in the snow to the summit lookout to admire the view of Asahikawa City, and then carefully hiked down to a hearty soba noodle lunch. We called in to the Ainu museum in the afternoon, where we could witness a ritual of preserving salmon for winter. The day was just like travelling in time back to the Ainu world, we learned a lot about the Ainu culture and facts that are little known to even Hokkaido residents.
